Dating back for more than 5000 years, Yoga is an ancient Indian philosophy to help one on a path of spirituality. The meaning of the word yoga is ‘to join or yoke together’. Yoga brings your body and mind together, and is built on three main elements – exercise, breathing and meditation. The combination of mindful physical movement and breathing helps to quieten the mind and body from everyday stress.
Today’s modern approach more familiar in Western cultures focuses more on the physical element to yoga. Asana’s (or poses) are practiced in all varieties of yoga. Paired with the use of breath to help improve fitness and reduce stress.
There are many different varieties of yoga but most common practices include Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin and Ayurveda.
